Coldplay's Chris Martin went to our director Jonas Åkerlund to direct the music video for their song Magic.  Jonas sent me some reference and the band's song as a springboard to start feeling out where we would take the visuals for the film.

I always start with mood boards and on this job, it was an inspiring process diving back into Charlie Chaplin films and Houdini.

Tents going in.  We chose a location on the North East of downtown LA.  The modern backdrop of the cityscape and our old world circus was a nice contrast with the metro screaming past us every ten minutes.

Most of our props were handpainted and so had us working through the night.  A reason to work with people you love otherwise... misery!

Our real magicians who flew over from Sweden to help us with our magic tricks which Chris Martin really learned.  The hardest part for me was that I had to learn and understand the tricks too so that I could build the props correctly.  So next time you need to saw someone in half....

The film ended up being in black and white but we had so many great colours and textures available to us by scouring Universal drapery, antique shops and dumpsters!
